The Review: As part of Manchester Pride, Coronation Street creator Tony Warren, several of the soap’s writers and actors Antony Cotton and Brooke Vincent formed a panel for a one-off discussion of homosexuality and the small screen.
The discussion was lively, entertaining, thought-provoking and occasionally shocking (Warren’s account of cut-throat homophobic writing conferences, Cotton’s criticisers). All spoke passionately about the subject and I treasured this unique insight into how sexuality is incorporated into television. I even came away with my own opinion of stereotypes changed, making it clear that more work needs to be done within gay communities as well as outside.
The Verdict: A fun and interesting evening, sober enough to provoke thought and debate, but ultimately uplifting.
