The Review: Great Britain is the latest smash hit comedy at the National Theatre. Drawing heavily on the recent phone-hacking scandal, this uproarious, expletive-heavy piece is mostly very entertaining.
Billie Piper enhances her growing theatre CV proving she really can act, here playing Paige Britain, a tabloid journalist who will stop at nothing to get a scoop. Jokes come thick and fast and are often perilously close to the knuckle. A standout character is an hilariously incompetent police commissioner.
The journos are bent, the coppers are bent, the government is bent. And from this corrupt world, an entertaining (but shallow) farce emerges.
The Verdict: If you want anything deep or moving, this isn't for you, but if it's laughs you're after, you could do a lot worse.
