The Review: Having seen the successful Royal Exchange production several years ago, I did worry that I’d be disappointed by this. My fears were soon allayed. The performances throughout are outstanding, ex-EastEnder Charlie Brooks excelling as the loud, crude, but ultimately loving mother. The two young lads, neighbours who discover their growing feelings for each other, are wonderful and move from teary scenes to riotous laughter with ease.
I hate Jonathan Harvey. I hate him because I wish I’d written this gem of a play! It takes such skill to write something so moving and funny and this production is a triumph.
The Verdict: True to its title in every way.
