The Review: This beautifully-written novella doesn’t boast a fancy plot or anything gimmicky. Instead, the characterisation and poetic writing drive it forward until it is lodged firmly beneath your skin. Billy is a young man already in a relationship but he develops quite a different relationship with another, far older, man. What the two share is sweet, tragic, haunting and reaches something like love, possibly greater, but not in the conventional sense.
The writing is superb throughout and the descriptions of drug intoxication are some of the best I’ve read; the resultant mix of heightened beauty, sadness and tragedy is just perfect.
The Verdict: A refreshingly honest and compelling account of an unexpected relationship, this book will stay with you.
