The Review: Biopics have to work harder than other films to avoid being paint-by-numbers affairs. This film of Stephen Hawking’s life, although it starts off worryingly plodding, evolves into one of true greatness. At the heart is Eddie Redmayne’s triumphant portrayal of Hawking, a performance steeped in remarkable physicality and touching warmth. His first wife, Felicity Jones, gives a fine performance opposite.
It’s beautifully shot and well-acted throughout, Redmayne a shoo-in for an Oscar nomination. His performance touched me far more than Cumberbatch’s comparatively cold portrayal of Alan Turing.
Oh, and near the end there’s a delightful sequence which is a masterstroke!
The Verdict: Redmayne 1: Cumberbatch 0
