The Review: Andrew (Miles Teller) wants to be one of the best jazz drummers. Fletcher (JK Simmons) wants to tutor one of the best jazz drummers. And so begins a tremendous battle between the two.
Simmons is terrifying as the brutal, foul-mouthed teacher who will stand for nothing but the best - “‘Good job’ are two of the most damaging words in the English language” - fully deserving his Oscar nomination. Teller shines as the youth desperate to reach unimaginable drumming heights.
I predicted the ending several times and was wrong on each occasion. The dialogue-free blood- and sweat-soaked conclusion is fittingly stunning.
The Verdict: No sign of just a 'good job' here. This is a masterpiece.
